Who’s the “Derpy-est” One of All?

Today I continue with Made-It-Up Mondays.

Every once in a while, I throw out a made-up word and ask you to a) define the word, and b) then use the word in a sentence that indicates how the word could be used.

Why? Because someone gave me the book The Meaning of Tingo: And Other Extraordinary Words from Around the World.

For example:

You know that feeling of anticipation when you are waiting for people to show up at your house and you keep wandering over to the window to check to see if they are there yet? Yeah, well, the Inuit call that “Iktsuarpok.”

We don’t really have a word for that in English, do we?

When I can’t find the right word on the word-shelf to fit my mood or predicament, I often just make one up.

The last time we did this the word was “castanurgle, and I created a poll to find out which answer readers thought was the best answer. Folks voted for Chrystal from The Spirit Within.  She said a castanurgle is “a dilemma for which there is no easy solution.”

Funny, I always thought a castanurgle was when you just so happened to be stuck in a castle with a case of the sniffles and you don’t have any tissues handy! Shows you what I know. 😉

Continuing alphabetically, this week, the made up word was:

DERPY

But then I learned DERPY is a real word! Kind of.

I mean, it’s in Urban dictionary! See definition HERE!

So, who’s the derpy one today?

I’m guess I’m revising things retroactively.

What’s the “derpy-est” thing you’ve done lately?

Like I sprayed perfume in my mouth this morning.

Also, I spit my mouthwash into the garbage can.

Also I wrote this blog about a word that isn’t a word that is a word.

Derp.

  1. Derpy, noun, found in the urban dictionary in the Land of Fairies. The young adult/teen term for another person who is very intecllectual but does not fit in socially. Kind of like geek or nerd on Earth. At Pixie Dust Academy a student will be given detention if overheard calling another student a derpy.

    Have a great Monday!

  2. Derpy, noun, meaning retarded, incredibly stupid or, alternately, clumsy, derived from the phrase “ever herped so much that you derped?” Though mostly an internet meme, derpy is gaining a foothold in everyday English language.

  3. I KNOW THIS ONE!

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this Renée, but you’ve hit on some serious meme with this post today.

“Derp” is actually a word used to express stupidity – like “duh” and all those kinds of words. These days it’s usually accompanied by the word “Herp” and the activity of saying stupid things is often referred to as “Herping the Derp”.

I couldn’t have made that up if I’d tried and I’m cackling insanely as I write this! Would you like me to link the Know Your Meme entry? Let me know (or Google it yourself), it is hilarious!

  4. My guess was that you used it as a combo between dorky and twerpy, but since Urban Dictionary, which holds far more authority these days than Webster, has already defined it, I’ll tell my most recent derpy activity.

Yesterday, in a flurry to retrieve scrapbooking materials, I ran into my bedroom doorjamb not once, but twice. I have a small boob bruise to prove it. I am a derp.

  5. The derpy-est thing I’ve done was trying to work in the wheel well of my car with the wheel still on. And I wonder why my arms are all scratched and bruised…

To make up another definition: Derpy: Mopey, depressed, slightly shunned. e.g: When ever Norm would walk in on Cheers I felt derpy, because no one has ever yelled my name when I walked into a room.

  7. Derpiest thing I’ve done lately:

A few days ago I started the day by dropping a coffee lid into my coffee, splashing myself and the girl standing next to me (plus the whole counter).

I then slapped myself in the face with my handbag as I tried to save my computer from the waterfall of coffee.

    Herp a derp.

  8. I forgot my friend’s daughter’s name this weekend and was in the middle of asking a question about her and hand to shift gears and make it broader. It was so obvious…..A derpy moment.

  9. I keep trying to take off my eye makeup with nail polish remover. It’s a reoccurring problem. Fail. Total derp.

  10. First, thanks for the shout out! 2nd – could you have found a happier post to link to? Not sure I want all your readers knowing how my dog killed my neighbor’s pet rabbit!

I haven’t been derpy recently, but I think my dog has.

  11. Apparently Derpy is a little gray My Little Pony character as well as an Urban Dictionary term. Look up “Derpy Hooves”.

    • I saw that!

      Derpy Hooves actually sound groovy.

That’s been the best part of this post.

I have considered deleting this post several times today.

      Out of pure shame.

But somehow writing a derpy post about the word “derpy” just seems right.

  12. Well, I hosted a birthday party (two, actually!) this weekend and apparently while cleaning up I put a bag of tortilla chips in the fridge. (Peppermeister discovered them there the next day.)
